Parlez-vous Finnish?

Let's Kalsarikännit!

For those of you in the depth of despair because it’s dark outside, today is a good day to remember that:

Some places have (much) harsher, darker winters

Stew is comfort food that deserves red wine

The last one? Our Finnish nomination for the Word of the Year, it means ‘underwear drunk’ or more precisely...getting drunk, at home, by yourself, in your underpants.
They even have an emoji for it.

The Now

It’s a thing. And as Finland is regarded as having the best education in the world, as well as being ranked the happiest country in the world, who are we to argue with super smart, super happy people?

It's your turn to Kalsarikännit!

The Tomorrow

Tentenublo "Xerico” Rioja 2015
request this or any wine in your mix case basket

$33 /bottle

The label screams Old School, you’ll scream “Delicious!" because the label is the only thing about the wine that is old fashioned. Original - almost mind-bendingly so - old vine Tempranillo co-fermented with Macabeo and aged in a combination of concrete and chestnut foudre for 5 months. So unlike the ‘Rioja' we think we know. Instead, it’s slurpable, a little funky with tonnes of fruit juiciness, structure and freshness.  Basically, if you’re not in your underwear when you start this wine…

100 Hunts Mornington Shiraz 2016
request this or any wine in your mix case basket

$25 /bottle

Joe Vaughan has been growing top quality grapes for most of the big names for as long as we can remember. (That’s 1996, apparently) Dolly the sheep was cloned as the vineyard went in. Shiraz? Mornington? Those of us that live here know, for the rest of you - thanks to a north facing Tuerong site, it oozes silky black fruit and spice, but with that classic refreshing MP acidity backbone that adds crunch and keeps you coming back for more.

The Eternal

Fallen Giants Grampians Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
request this or any wine in your mix case basket

$28 /bottle

Always sells out in a flash. Perhaps it was the 98 points James Halliday wacked on the accolades sheet, but more likely because it delivers so much fruit and structure… and is simply delicious. The vineyard was planted in 1969 by the late, great Trevor Mast (Mount Langi Ghiran) before passing into the hands of Rebecca and Aaron Drummond. Cabernet, king of grapes, never left the building, it was merely singing duets in Vegas waiting for this homecoming.
